WOODBURY, N.Y., Jan. 31, 2008 - While the groundhog is preparing for his shadow on Saturday, GEICO is preparing to be "shadowed" by four students from Herricks High School in New Hyde Park and two students from Bishop McGann Mercy High School in Riverhead as part of Teen Mentoring Day, sponsored by the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island on Friday, Feb. 1.
This year six students will spend the day at GEICO's regional office on Long Island with GEICO executives including Regional Vice President Seth Ingall, GEICO's human resources department and GEICO's legal department going to court.
GEICO has worked with the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island for over 10 years now to help connect with the youth of New York and help them prepare for their futures.
"We hope that we can make a difference in the lives of young people who will be our leaders tomorrow," said Ingall. "Through an enormous commitment by many of our associates, our goal is to make sure that no child is undervalued and that we can help them become the best."
Teens come to GEICO once a year on Groundhog's Day to shadow adults in a profession in which they have a strong interest. Mentoring Partnership of Long Island provides a list of companies and employees to the teenagers so they can choose whom they would like to follow.
GEICO participates in a number of other school mentoring programs such as the "Prosper Program" at Nassau Community College, Hofstra University, Adelphi University and SUNY Old Westbury, the "LEAP Program" at Division High School in Levittown; and the "Third Grade Students Go to Work Program" in the Half Hollow Hills School District.
