Orlando, FL – Teenagers learning to drive will experience a new and innovative program in Hillsborough County, thanks to a grant provided by GEICO, one of the largest auto insurers in Florida and in the nation. The Road Wise curriculum is a unique driver education program that utilizes digital technology to capture the attention of teens in the classroom.
The Road Wise program has no textbooks. It is a very interactive course featuring various audio-visual presentations, along with teacher interaction and discussion. There are still quizzes, however, and students are assigned remote controls so they can simultaneously enter their responses into a computer tracking system.
"This gives teachers immediate feedback on how well students are comprehending various topics," said Glenn Victor, spokesperson for the Florida Safety Council which is coordinating the GEICO grant funding and Road Wise program. "The days of just assigning our kids a chapter to read from a textbook and then quizzing them on it are on the way out. When we're addressing a topic as serious as driving a motor vehicle, the biggest killer of our young people, we've got to do more."
The grant funding will cover the cost of the program for one full year at Leto High School which has been selected to pilot the program. "We commend GEICO for taking an active role in the safety of our teenagers,"said Victor. "The Road Wise program goes a long way in saving lives and takes our driver education courses in Florida to the next level."
