GEICO talks to teens at Gloucester High School on Feb. 14

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 12, 2008 - Why are new drivers more likely to be in accidents? And how can parents help them stay safe?

GEICO will be at Ocean Lakes High School, Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7:45 a.m. to lead two discussions on what's safe and what's definitely not safe for new drivers.

Teens will learn that the very first six months of solo driving are the most dangerous for teens because they no longer have an instructor or parent to guide them and lack the experience behind the wheel.

Here are some reminders for new drivers that will be covered at the GEICO presentation on Feb. 14:

  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • No teen passengers for the first 6 months
  • No cell phone use or text messaging while driving--if you have an emergency, pull safely off to the side of the road
  • Limit night-driving during the first 6 months
  • Get practice driving in all types of weather
  • Don't drive while you're tired
  • No drinking or drugs
