WASHINGTON, D.C., May 7 2008 - Sgt. Eric D. Mejia is the Army recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention. He was presented his award by GEICO CEO Tony Nicely at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 28.
Sgt. Mejia currently serves as the Fire Safety Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in Fort Bliss, Texas. As a combat veteran of the Global War on Terrorism, he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he saw first hand the devastating effects of unsafe acts on a daily basis. Sgt. Mejia took these valuable lessons learned in combat and applied them to his duties as safety officer within his unit.
Sgt. Mejia has taken his personal time to ensure all members of his unit have been properly trained within 30 days of their arrival. He ensures everyone knows and understands evacuation routes, use of safety equipment, and notification procedures required in accordance with all Army regulations. As a result of his hard work, Sgt. Mejia was awarded the 3rd Battalion NCO of the Quarter twice in 2007.
