WASHINGTON, D.C., October 28, 2008 – GEICO and Max Papis will make the jump to the top NASCAR series in 2009, racing in the popular Sprint Cup beginning in February.
After spending eight years in NASCAR's number two series, Papis will pilot the #13 GEICO Toyota Camry in the "big league" circuit. Papis is regarded as one of the most versatile race car drivers in the world, having run in the Formula One and Champ Car circuits and the Indianapolis 500.
"We're very excited to move up to the Sprint Cup Series with Max Papis," said Ted Ward, GEICO vice president of marketing. "Max's personality is a proper fit for the GEICO brand and will serve us well as we move forward in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series."
Papis is often referred to as "Mad Max" after he turned in some of the fastest recorded track times at the 1996 24 Hours of Daytona in a Ferrari that had been badly battered and banged up.
GEICO begins a four-year sponsorship agreement with Germain Racing in 2009 that will find the Gecko® adorning the hood of the #13 Germain Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entry for 18 races per season.
The GEICO Racing team will make its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut this year at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 2 in the Dickies 500. The team will also participate at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 16 in the Cup Series season finale, the Ford 400.
