FREDERICKSBURG, Va., February 6, 2009 – The Rappahannock United Way this week recognized local businesses for their 2008 campaign support. GEICO was honored as the highest contributor with $631,267, a 10 percent increase on the part of GEICO’s Stafford County associates over last year.

GEICO also received two additional awards: the Chairman’s Awards of Excellence for Employee Campaign Performance, led by GEICO Regional Vice President John Izzo and the award for Employee Campaign Coordinators of the Year which went to GEICO associates Michelle Cox and Robin Gernhard.

"In these trying economic times, it would be easy for people to say, 'I just can't give right now,'" said Izzo.  “But our associates didn't and I’m so proud of them for their generosity.”

He continued, “Our commitment to making the communities where we operate business a better place to live is upheld by our associates who understand that their donations to United Way help make a difference locally. I look forward to continued successful campaigns.”

Janel Donohue, Rappahannock United Way vice president of marketing and development, said, “The enthusiasm and passion GEICO associates have for their community is contagious. I am amazed by how generous they are of their time, money and talents, not only to Rappahannock United Way but to our community as a whole. It is not surprising that they raised 20 percent of the overall dollars for Rappahannock United Way.”

Robin Gernhard, GEICO’s 2008 campaign committee president, explained that even in the times of economic uncertainty, GEICO associates gave as much as they could in order to help their neighbors. Her team promoted the theme of ‘Live United’ throughout their campaign.

Rappahannock United Way announced it surpassed last year’s annual campaign total. Individuals and businesses contributed $3,062,000 to the 2008 campaign, topping last year's donations by more than $38,000.

Donations to the Rappahannock United Way help finance more than 60 programs and supports 35 non-profit agencies that collectively serve local citizens in Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline and Fredericksburg.
