Westport man is honored for his volunteerism

GEICO recognizes Fred Mastriacovo as community volunteer of the year

WESTPORT, Conn., March 20, 2009 – Fred Mastriacovo of Westport, Conn., is this year's honored recipient of the GEICO John Thorne Volunteer of the Year Award*, which goes to the outstanding GCCC (GEICO Corporate Community Citizen) member each year. Mastriacovo recently attended special ceremonies at GEICO's headquarters in Washington, D.C., to recognize the contributions he has made to the southern Connecticut communities.

The Connecticut-based auto damage manager, who has worked at GEICO for 33 years, dedicates his time and effort to making sure the Connecticut Special Olympics is a meaningful and memorable experience for all the local athletes and their families.

Mastriacovo began volunteering with the Special Olympics seven years ago with his wife Irene. Every summer they help run the GEICO booth which provides prizes and games for the athletes.

"The first year I wasn't entirely clear on what I would be doing or how I would be helping," said Mastriacovo. "But once I was there I was just so blown away by the love this community gives. After that first year I knew I was in this for the long haul."

"This has become a very important part of my life. I don't do this for any sort of award," he continued. "I keep volunteering because it is important and because I enjoy it."

GEICO's Steve Cunningham, regional vice president of Northeast operation, said, "Fred was chosen because he epitomizes the spirit of volunteer service. GEICO rewards its associates who make a difference by contributing to the organizations for which they volunteer. We have donated $1,000 to the Connecticut Special Olympics at Fred's request."

The GEICO Volunteer Service Award is presented annually to recognize the many contributions GEICO associate volunteers make.
