DALLAS, April 22, 2009 – An active volunteer and supporter of MADD, Stephanie Malito, of Irving, lost her father, Joseph, and her twin brother, Vincent, to a drunk driver in 1992 when her family was driving home from Christmas vacation in Florida. When their car began to overheat, they pulled onto the side of the road to take a break. Minutes later, an SUV collided with the family. Investigations indicated that the driver's alcohol level was over the legal limit.
On Saturday, April 25, victims and survivors like Malito, a claims representative for GEICO, will join supporters of MADD's life-saving cause to walk against drunk driving and destructive choices at their Walk Like MADD event.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m. at 1800 N. Pearl St., near the Meyerson Symphony Center, in Dallas' Uptown neighborhood. To register and form a walk team, visit www.walklikemadd.org.
"I am one of the lucky ones to walk away from a drunk driving accident. Not everyone is as lucky. Please don't drink and drive and always choose a designated driver," said Malito, who spent months recovering from injuries.
Locally presented by GEICO for the fourth consecutive year, Walk Like MADD is a pledge-based, non-competitive 5K walk benefiting the mission of MADD to prevent drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
"It takes the whole community to educate our children concerning underage drinking. Walk Like MADD gives youth a chance to see the positive ways that they can influence their environment to prevent underage drinking and drinking and driving," said Mary Kardell, MADD North Texas executive director.
Founded in 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the premiere organization working to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. MADD has approximately 600 chapters and 2 million members and supporters nationwide. Visit www.madd.org or www.walklikemadd.org.
