VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 22, 2009 – To help local schools receive the funding they need in the current economic conditions, GEICO has created the "Insurance 2 Achieve" program and contributed $25,000 to the seven school districts in the Hampton Roads community.
In collaboration with the education foundations and Title 1 coordinators in those districts, GEICO's $25,000 contribution will be allocated among Title 1 schools in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News.
"On behalf of all the education foundations, it is gratifying to see community partners like GEICO putting their resources into public education," said Debbie Thomas, executive director of the Virginia Beach Education Foundation. "Children attending public schools can directly benefit from the volunteer and financial support that GEICO and its associates have provided. Not only is this investment in public education, but also our future workforce."
Joe Thomas, regional vice president for GEICO's Virginia Beach operations, noted, "We wanted to do something to help our local schools during these tough economic times. GEICO is committed to supporting programs that focus on educating youth – our leaders of tomorrow – by helping Title 1 schools get the funding and resources they need through our ‘Insurance 2 Achieve' program."
GEICO's "Insurance 2 Achieve" program provides additional funding for Title 1 schools to purchase instructional materials and supplies necessary for the educational development of local students.
