FREDERICKSBURG, Va., September 21, 2009 — You’ve probably received mail from GEICO before, but did you know that GEICO is large enough to have its own zip code?  That would be 22412, and it’s home to GEICO’s regional office and National Print Mail Center (NPMC) in Fredericksburg.

The NPMC provides national customer document printing and automated mail operations, as well as customer records management.  This month it celebrates 10 years of helping GEICO grow its business to more than 9 million customers.

Elizabeth Brown, operational manager, recalls how much GEICO’s mail capacity has grown in 10 years. In the first year, the NPMC handled more than 65 million pieces of First Class mail compared to the expected 130 million pieces this year.  Despite the doubling of volume, improved technology allows the center to operate with 190 associates, compared to 248 when it first opened.

Jennifer Provo, imaging manager, says, “Our best asset has always been the associates.  They are committed to achieving great results as evidenced by our near perfect service levels.”

Provo’s area scans all incoming paper documents and turns them into electronic files.  This environment-friendly practice minimizes paper and also allows claims handlers and service associates in various locations around the country to review the electronic files simultaneously for quick resolution. So far this year, the imaging center has processed more than 4.5 million documents and received nearly two million faxes.

Containing costs is an ongoing challenge.  The center recently switched to a lighter-weight paper. This small change is projected to save $260,000 in 2009 by reducing the paper price and the mailing fees.

At the dedication of the center in 1999, Mark Kilduff, then executive director of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, said, “GEICO’s expansion in Stafford County adds significantly to the local economy. For this, and for GEICO’s continuing good works in our community, Virginia is proud to claim GEICO as one of our most respected corporate citizens.”

Today, Bill Riddle, director of the NPMC said, “Our center runs 24 hours a day, six days a week and employs 304 associates. Together, they print more than 80 million images for our customers each month and process an average of 1,400,000 pieces of First Class and marketing mail daily. This demonstrates how commitment and new technologies go hand in hand to help to serve of customers.”
