GEICO urges teens and parents to focus on road safety during Homecoming season

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 11, 2009 – Homecoming season is here and GEICO knows it can be a dangerous time for teen drivers. With teens and their friends excitedly driving to school dances, parents should be especially cautious when handing off the car keys to their teen. The crash risk among teenage drivers is particularly high during the first months of licensure according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

As your teen heads out the door this year, remind them of these simple tips to help stay safe on the road:

  • Cell phones are for emergency use only on the road — if you have to use your phone, pull safely over to the side of the road.
  • Absolutely NO texting.
  • ALWAYS wear your safety belt.
  • Limit your passengers — the risk of fatal crashes increases with every additional passenger.
  • Underage drinking and drug use is illegal — driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can cost you your license-or your life.
  • Stay focused while driving — avoid distractions such as loud music, eating or interacting too much with friends.

For more information, including your local graduated licensing laws, visit geicoteendriving.com. GEICO’s teen driving site is a resource portal for parents and teens to keep the discussion moving forward and to learn the latest safety tips and recommendations from the traffic and highway safety experts. YouTube, Facebook and blog applications are available for teens to connect with each other and compare their own learning to drive experiences.
