GEICO teams up with Junior Achievement to teach students at Burdell-Hunt Magnet School for 7th consecutive year

MACON, Ga., January 22, 2010 — For the seventh consecutive year, 24 GEICO associates are taking on teaching assignments at Burdell-Hunt Magnet School next week, Jan. 25 – 29, to assist the Junior Achievement of Georgia.  They will teach classes focused on the importance of business, economics and free enterprise to almost 400 students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade.

"It's a tremendous honor to have business leaders in our community like GEICO come to our school to provide instruction about the importance of economics," said Burdell-Hunt Principal Tanya Allen. "The current economic structure in our country is fluid and it's imperative that students understand how they fit into the big picture. The partnership with GEICO and Junior Achievement provides real-world financial and educational activities whereby the students will gain life goals for their spending habits."

Each grade level at Burdell-Hunt will focus on age-appropriate studies: younger students will learn the difference between wants and needs and how to save; older students will learn how money works in society on a national level. GEICO associates will also share their own career experiences to demonstrate how everyone has a role to play in a successful economy.

"This will be my sixth year teaching in the Junior Achievement program," said Tammy Ussery, a lead system analyst for GEICO.  "I look forward to working with the students each year and seeing them grow up. I believe investing of our time in them gives our whole community something priceless.”

Shawn Burklin, regional vice president of GEICO's Macon office, added, "At GEICO, one of our operating principles emphasizes investing for future returns.  We look at our involvement in Junior Achievement as a long term investment in our youth and we're happy to provide our resources to help them develop financial literacy."
