MACON, Ga., April 23, 2010 – Local Macon area runners covered nearly 2,300 miles last month in the 27th Annual GEICO Road Race to benefit Special Olympics Georgia. Together, the 585 runners—including 157 associates from GEICO—raised over $45,000. The public is invited to the check presentation ceremony on Tuesday, April 27, 10 a.m., at GEICO’s 4400 Ocmulgee East Blvd. location.
Georgia Milton-Sheats, CEO of Special Olympics Georgia, said, "The support that GEICO has given our local program is remarkable. Special Olympics is fortunate to have this ongoing relationship with GEICO and its terrific volunteers who have helped raise more than $600,000 during the past two decades. They are the primary source of funds for our local Macon chapter, and generate over 90 percent of its operating budget."
She explained that the funding helps over 710 Special Olympics athletes in the Middle Georgia area participate in track and field, basketball, bowling, golf and sailing competitions every year.
GEICO race directors were Gary Musolf, Keely Porter and Randy Thompson who coordinated the regional event. Thompson, a GEICO claims director, said, "This was our best year ever in terms of the number of race participants and in funds everyone raised for Special Olympics. We appreciate our neighbors in Middle Georgia who participate in this great event, and we are so proud of our GEICO associate volunteers for the care they show for their community. The local Special Olympics athletes are near and dear to our hearts."
