Campaign Celebrates The National Urban League's 100th Anniversary
NORFOLK, Va., May 21, 2010 – The National Urban League of Hampton Roads will be celebrating the National Urban League’s 100th anniversary with a year-long campaign called, ‘100 Lives Changed’. The campaign will kick off with the 2010 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Dinner happening Friday, May 21. GEICO and several other local companies (Cox Communications, Norfolk Southern, Towne Bank and Suntrust) will sponsor the event.
The dinner honors the legacy of Whitney M. Young, Jr. the former executive director of the National Urban League who brought the League into the civil rights arena during the 1960s. As the Urban League of Hampton Roads’ signature event, this dinner will honor individuals and corporations in the community that uphold ideals of equal opportunity, diversity and justice.
"This is such a shining moment for the Urban League," said Edith White, president and CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads. "With this campaign, we get the opportunity to celebrate the individuals and organizations that have supported the League and helped to empower our efforts. We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate with this commemorative dinner."
"GEICO is honored to be a part of the Urban League’s 100th anniversary celebration," said Joe Thomas, regional vice president of GEICO’s Virginia Beach office. "The Urban League of Hampton Roads does such a great job of giving back to the local community and we proudly support them in their efforts."
