GEICO honors Gary Musolf of Macon for his volunteerism

MACON, Ga., Sept. 30, 2010 – Gary Musolf of Macon, Ga., is this year’s honored recipient of the GEICO John Thorne Volunteer of the Year Award. He recently took part in special ceremonies at GEICO’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., that recognized the contributions he has made to the Macon community.

Musolf, a retired southeast claims assistant vice president, had been with GEICO for more than 43 years. For 27 of those years, he worked as the co-director for the annual GEICO Road Race in support of the Georgia Special Olympics. Proceeds from the race totaled more than $400,000 and have sponsored 500 athletes from a dozen countries.

“I was blessed as a child with many volunteer organizations that helped me develop as an individual,” said Musolf. “We each need to take it upon ourselves and give back to the community because it is the right thing to do. GEICO encourages us to be solid corporate citizens and provides a way for us to give back.”

Musolf also served as the GEICO representative and coordinator for Macon’s Relay for Life, which supports the American Cancer Society. GEICO’s Mary Zarcone, regional vice president of Macon, said, “Gary was chosen because he epitomizes the spirit of volunteer service.  GEICO rewards its associates who make a difference by contributing to the organizations for which they volunteer.  We have donated $1,000 to the Georgia Special Olympics in his honor.”
