WOODBURY, N.Y., Nov. 22, 2010 – GEICO recently partnered with the national program, Recycled Rides™, to give refurbished vehicles to four local military families on Long Island that could benefit from reliable transportation. Each family included a member from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Suffolk County. The families accepted the vehicles at a Nov. 13 ceremony.
Recycled Rides is an awareness project that encourages local National Auto Body Council (NABC) members to refurbish and donate vehicles to local families in their community.
GEICO was able to donate four used vehicles: a 2004 Saturn Vue, a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, a 2007 Chevy Equinox and a 2004 Honda Odyssey. After each vehicle was donated, several local NABC body shops donated their time and materials to get the cars in working order and up to safety standards.
“GEICO was delighted to have this opportunity to make a direct impact on our local community,” said Ken Lalia, a GEICO manager who helped organize the project and present the vehicles to the families.“This was really a community effort, and it’s a pleasure to be part of such an honorable program.”
The cars were presented to the vehicle recipients at a special ceremony held at the VFW Hall last Saturday. Guests from Recycled Rides, NABC, GEICO, VFW and local Assemblyman Dean Murray attended the celebration.
“It’s such a privilege to have companies like GEICO participate in this program,” said Recycled Rides Chairman Nick Notte. “Having a vehicle is something people often take for granted, but there are many families out there that need reliable transportation. We’ve found that it often changes their lives. We are delighted to partner with companies like GEICO who really make a difference in our communities.”
