WASHINGTON, D.C., September 29, 2011 – After seeing how much the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) has accomplished with its GEICO Driver Training Program for the past 24 years, GEICO pledged an additional $100,000 to the program to continue its life-affirming work.
NRH designed the GEICO Driver Training Program to help auto crash victims regain their driving capabilities and to help people with disabilities learn how to drive, sometimes with the aid of adaptive equipment.
"We have witnessed the hospital’s efforts in teaching patients with mobility, cognitive or visual impairments how to drive with adaptive equipment or adaptive strategies," said Nancy Pierce, GEICO vice president. "This donation gives the hospital an opportunity to build the Driver Training Program and help more drivers regain the confidence they need to drive again."
NRH provides a number of specialty services including vocational services, sleep studies, clinics for seating and mobility, spasticity, rehabilitation engineering and prosthetics and orthotics. Pierce presented the check to John Rockwood, president of NRH, on July 27.
"The National Rehabilitation Hospital greatly appreciates the invaluable role GEICO has played in the hospital’s first 25 years, in terms of both financial and leadership support," said Rockwood. "We have been privileged to have a member of the GEICO leadership team on the NRH Board from day one, helping us to become a national leader in rehabilitation medicine. GEICO’s generous gift to NRH for the Driver Training Program is very meaningful, especially to the many patients we see at NRH each year and particularly those who work to get back on the road driving again."
