WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2011 – GEICO is calling on students to show their creativity to promote the importance of safe driving by entering its 2011-2012 Safety Poster and Video Contest. GEICO, for the 25th year, invites students in grades 1-12 from across the country to create hand-drawn or computer-generated posters that encourage safe driving situations. Students between the ages of 14-18 can also submit videos that capture the importance of vehicle safety. Videos can be in the format of sketch comedy, music video, song performance, documentary, reality show or animation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teenagers are involved in three times as many fatal traffic accidents as all other drivers. Driving behaviors such as not wearing a seat belt, distracted driving (talking and texting on a cell phone) and inexperience behind the wheel are the major contributors to teen-related crashes. Safety belts saves lives, say traffic and highway studies for all drivers and passengers.
Students can choose among three different safety themes:
• The importance of wearing safety belts
• No texting while driving
• Staying focused to prevent distracted driving
This year’s contest will feature 25 National Winners. Each winner will receive a $250 cash prize. The deadline for submissions is January 6, 2012. For more information on the contest rules, please visit www.geicosafetycontest.com.
