UMUC honors 5 students for earning GEICO Federal/Military scholarships

WASHINGTON, D.C., February 27, 2012 – Five students from University of Maryland University College (UMUC) have each earned a $1,000 scholarship through the GEICO Federal/Military Scholarship Fund for spouses and children of federal and military service members. They will be honored at the University’s appreciation dinner on Feb. 28.

The award recipients for the 2011-2012 academic year are as follows:

  • Carissa Conley of Pennsylvania is the wife of an active-duty Army service member, majoring in marketing.
  • Tambera Goodwin of Germany is a spouse of an active-duty Air Force service member, majoring in business administration. 
  • Amanda McGranaghan of North Carolina is the spouse of an active-duty United States Marine Corps service member, majoring in cyber security.
  • Christina Teston of Maryland is a child of a Vietnam-era veteran, majoring in business administration.
  • Thananya Wannananon of Japan is a child of a federal employee, majoring in general studies. 

"GEICO is honored to help further the college education of the spouses and children of our federal and military service members," said Don Lyons, GEICO’s senior vice president. "We hope to aid these students in accomplishing their goals during the upcoming academic year."  
   
The GEICO Federal/Military Scholarship Fund requires spouses and children of federal and military service members to have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and to have enrolled in at least six credit hours during the award period at UMUC.
