GEICO reminds drivers about the dangers of distractions

Washington, D.C., April 4, 2012 – April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and GEICO is reminding drivers about the dangers of distracted driving.

While texting is the most alarming distraction, GEICO is encouraging drivers to avoid all distractions during the month of April and beyond.  GEICO’s message: stop using cellphones or texting while driving, avoid eating, drinking and grooming while driving, and focus on the road and not on the passengers.

Throughout April, GEICO regional offices will be hosting several events to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving:

  • GEICO’s Virginia Beach office is sponsoring a party for a local high school that earned the highest percentage of student pledges during GEICO’s Distracted Driving Pledge Contest.
  • In GEICO’s Dallas, Lakeland, Fla., and Woodbury, N.Y. offices, associates will be visiting local high schools to discuss the risks of distracted driving among teens and their parents.
  • Germain Racing driver Casey Mears has partnered with DRIVE SMART Virginia and his sponsor GEICO to bring awareness to the hazards associated with distracted driving during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in Virginia.

“Distracted driving is becoming a major problem for many drivers across the country,” said Don Lyons, GEICO’s senior vice president. “Through our distracted driving awareness efforts, we encourage all drivers to change their driving habits to help protect themselves, their families, and other drivers on the road.”
