GEICO's April 17 Earth Fair sets stage for local green initiatives for company associates

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 17, 2012 – Is Mother Nature sending us a signal in spring to become better stewards of the planet?

GEICO associates think that’s very possible, and they’ve arranged a series of activities to help raise environmental awareness during Earth Month, beginning with an Earth Fair today at GEICO’s corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Representatives from local vendors and organizations such as Bethesda Green, Goodwill, Montgomery County and many others will be on site to meet GEICO associates and give them first-hand information about how they can develop more environmentally-conscious habits and behaviors at work and at home. The company has also set up an exhibit showcasing recycled materials that have been turned into usable products.

As part of the company’s Green Initiative, associates are tackling recycling in a big way. A complete cleanup of the roughly 600,000-square-foot headquarters office is underway throughout April and the 2,200 associates there are recycling or properly disposing of unwanted binders; outdated hard copy magazines, periodicals, books and other publications; obsolete forms; surplus office supplies; and rechargeable batteries.

GEICO associates will also put their recycling efforts into action when they help celebrate the Cherry Blossom Festival’s 100th anniversary at the National Mall and Memorial Parks by helping to collect recyclables and clean up trash.

And on April 27, Arbor Day, GEICO associates will have a chance to take part in eco-friendly activities that encourage supporting green life, from small seeds to large trees. A terrarium-building class will show employees how to build small plant enclosures that simulate outdoor environments and serve as a desktop reminder that being green is at their fingertips.

The company will also host a ceremonial tree planting on April 27 to recognize the holiday and encourage associates to build toward the future and make their world a greener, cleaner place … just like Mother Nature would like it.
