Virginia Beach, Va., April 17, 2012Goodwill and GEICO are partnering to provide a convenient, free, and tax-deductible way to properly dispose of old computers and electronics, as well as clothing and other household items.

Area residents can bring their items to GEICO’s office in the Corporate Landing Business Park,1345 Perimeter Parkway, on Wednesday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Goodwill donation attendants and GEICO volunteers will be on-hand at the big Goodwill truck to help unload items, answer questions, and provide donation receipts.

Spring is a great time to donate gently used clothing, shoes, books, household items, and furniture to Goodwill.

People will be interested to know that Goodwill accepts any brand of computers and peripherals, in any condition. Thanks to its Reconnect Partnership with Dell, Goodwill can assure donors that all computer items will be either refurbished and resold in its stores to fund its mission or those computer items will properly recycled by a Dell-authorized product recovery partner. There is no fee for these services.

In 2010 alone, Goodwill serving Hampton Roads and Central Virginia kept more than 1.32 million pounds of e-waste out of area landfills. Nationally, the five-year Reconnect Partnership has kept more than 232 million pounds of e-waste out of landfills.

Resale of donated goods provides Goodwill with the revenue for job skills training and career development services to individuals with disadvantages and disabilities in central Virginia.  Thanks to those donations, Goodwill served over 19,000 people through its Community Employment Centers and other job skills-related programs in 2011.
