WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2012 – GEICO is proud to announce that Staff Sergeant Mark A. King is the Air Force recipient of GEICO’s 2011 Military Service Award for his work in drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Staff Sergeant King is assigned to the 374th Security Forces Squadron, Yokota Air Base, Japan.
Staff Sergeant King has greatly enhanced alcohol and drug abuse awareness for the 11,000 military personnel, civilians and family members at Yokota Air Base, as well as those serving at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, during his deployment. Staff Sergeant King routinely gives his personal time to assist his fellow Airmen and others in his military and civilian communities. While at Yokota Air Base, Staff Sergeant King volunteered as the lead for the designated driver program, ensured roadways were safe for the 11,000 base residents and significantly reduced the number of DUIs during the holidays.
While deployed, Staff Sergeant King led contraband and drug sweeps securing more than 250 contraband items, including illegal drugs, from workers on the installation. He also volunteered for honor guard duty at his deployed location and performed three “Fallen Soldier” ceremonies, ensuring fallen servicemen received the appropriate honor and respect.
Staff Sergeant King is a “Grill Sergeant” for the monthly unit barbeque and has also volunteered at the post office and for the Camp Losano cleanup project.
GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented Staff Sergeant King the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C.
