Staff Sergeant James M. Sutton recognized as GEICO Military Service Award recipient

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2012GEICO is proud to announce that Staff Sergeant James M. Sutton is the Army recipient of GEICO's 2011 Military Service Award for his work in traffic safety and accident prevention. Staff Sgt. Sutton was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Troop Command, Madigan Healthcare System, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., when nominated.

Staff Sgt. Sutton created a motorcycle mentorship program at his unit which resulted in zero motorcycle fatalities and earned him the opportunity to refine the Joint Base Lewis-McChord installation motorcycle mentorship program as well as their motorcycle operator policies. He also established a DOD wide motorcycle club, the Minions of Chaos, to instill a climate of motorcycle safety on a large scale. Club members offer safety classes, sponsor safety rides, schedule specialty instructors for motorcycle-related classes and work with local law enforcement for accident prevention, both on-post and off-post.

Staff Sgt. Sutton is married to Rebecca Sutton and they have four daughters and two sons.

Major General Philip Volpe of the U.S. Army Readiness/Safety Center said, “I wholeheartedly endorse the nomination of Staff Sgt. Sutton for the 2011 GEICO Military Service Award. Staff Sgt. Sutton’s extraordinary efforts and accomplishment in the area of traffic safety dramatically increased our soldiers’ safety.”

GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented Staff Sgt. Sutton the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C.

Sutton has proven through his efforts in traffic safety and accident prevention that he is a valuable member in the community and is deserving of this honor.”
