WASHINGTON, D.C., May 1, 2012 – GEICO is proud to announce that Gunnery Sgt. Donald L. Garrison Jr. is the Marine Corps recipient of GEICO’s 2011 Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention. Gunnery Sgt. Garrison is assigned to maintenance Company, 2d Maintenance Battalion, in the II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Gunnery Sgt. Garrison has volunteered extensively with the Half Moon Fire Department of Jacksonville, N.C. He responded to more than 107 incidents in 2010, which helped save the lives of citizens trapped in vehicles and prevented the loss of countless dollars in personal property during the flooding of 2010. Although a “volunteer” fireman, he conducted 40 hours of classroom instruction and 80 hours of practical application to volunteers on a quarterly basis. He was the Rookie Firefighter of the Year for 2010 and Firefighter of the Month in March 2010.
Gunnery Sgt. Garrison is married to Christina Garrison and they have a three-year-old daughter.
Lieutenant Colonel K. R. Scott said, “Gunnery Sgt. Garrison’s achievements as a leader are inspirational to subordinates and superiors alike. Gunnery Sgt. Garrison is truly a role model for all Marines.”
GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented Gunnery Sgt. Garrison the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C.
