GEICO names Stephanie Baldwin of Lakeland community volunteer of the year

LAKELAND, Fla., September 11, 2012 – Stephanie Baldwin of Lakeland, Fla., has been named the 2012 recipient of the GEICO Volunteer Service Award.

Baldwin, an administrative assistant in GEICO’s Lakeland regional office, was recognized for her service to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). During the SPCA Florida 5K charity walk in April 2012, Baldwin herself raised more than $2,000 for the GEICO team, which helped the office land the SPCA’s “Leader of the Pack” distinction.

Baldwin, who has also coordinated her office’s Adopt-A-Road trash cleanups since 2010, said her love of animals is what got her interested in supporting the SPCA. “Organizations like the SPCA Florida help homeless animals by providing shelter, medicine, food and water through various community programs made possible by volunteers and donors,” Baldwin said. “They help educate the public about responsible pet ownership, help reduce the pet overpopulation and most importantly, they also help find good homes for the animals to be adopted into. All animals deserve to have families that care for them and the SPCA Florida makes every effort to make that happen.”

Rynthia Rost, GEICO’s vice president of public affairs, noted that Baldwin’s remarkable fundraising efforts for the SPCA 5K were an inspiration to her colleagues, both in Lakeland and throughout the company. “Stephanie has been a great example of what one person can do to make a difference,” Rost said.

In addition to recognizing Baldwin for her contributions, GEICO honored Lilly Smith of Silver Spring, Md., as this year’s recipient of the John Thorne GEICO Corporate Community Citizens (GCCC) Volunteer of the Year Award. Smith was selected for her outstanding leadership of GEICO’s Cystic Fibrosis Foundation campaign. This award recognizes the spirit of volunteerism that former GEICO associate John Thorne exemplified during his career at the company’s Woodbury, N.Y. office.

The John Thorne GCCC Volunteer of the Year and GEICO Volunteer Service Awards are presented annually to two GEICO volunteer associates who exemplify the spirit of volunteer service both individually or through the GEICO Corporate Community Citizens.
