GEICO honors Lilly Smith of Silver Spring for her volunteerism

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 11, 2012GEICO has selected Lilly Smith of Silver Spring, Md., as this year’s recipient of the John Thorne Corporate Community Citizens (GCCC) Volunteer of the Year Award.

Smith, a business analyst at GEICO’s headquarters, is the chair of GEICO’s Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) campaign, co-chair of the company’s United Way campaign and also a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life and Shepherd’s Table soup kitchen. Throughout the past year and a half, she has spent more than 20 hours per month volunteering for the organizations.

“The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is dear to my heart because of the amazing work the organization is doing for people living with cystic fibrosis,” Smith said. “There is a tangible excitement in the air when you meet with CFF staff, volunteers and even patients. Real, life-changing progress is being made towards a cure for cystic fibrosis. Life expectancy has doubled, if not tripled, thanks to this organization’s work. The CFF is filled with hope and love, and you can’t help but want to support good people saving lives.”

Rynthia Rost, GEICO’s vice president of public affairs, pointed to Smith’s generosity with her time and energy as a deciding factor in her receiving the honor. “Lilly is unselfish in giving of her time and talents,” Rost said. “From coordinating fundraisers, recruiting volunteers and even spending long hours baking cake pops to sell, Lilly gives 110 percent.”

The John Thorne Award recognizes the spirit of volunteerism that former GEICO associate John Thorne exemplified during his career at the company’s Woodbury, N.Y. office. In addition to recognizing Smith, GEICO honored Stephanie Baldwin of Lakeland, Fla., as this year’s recipient of the GEICO Volunteer Service Award. Baldwin was selected for her service to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

The John Thorne GCCC Volunteer of the Year and GEICO Volunteer Service Awards are presented annually to two GEICO volunteer associates who exemplify the spirit of volunteer service both individually or through the GEICO Corporate Community Citizens.
