GEICO celebrates 40 years of customer and community service in Woodbury

Woodbury, N.Y., February 7, 2013 – This year, GEICO honors 37 active associates who were with GEICO when the Woodbury office opened its doors in 1973.  They were recognized at a special event on Friday, January 31 at GEICO’s Woodbury office.

Keep in mind that in 1973, they worked without smartphones, iPads, apps, or text messages. But on the other hand, many of these associates might recall the debut of the first telephone call made from a handheld mobile phone in 1973.

“At GEICO, we have thousands of people around the country who have built satisfying careers by taking care of our policyholders for all their auto insurance needs,” noted John Pham, GEICO regional vice president. “We’re honored to have associates who’ve grown with us over the years. They are our greatest asset.”

In 1952, GEICO opened its first New York-area office on Broad Street in Manhattan. The company made several moves across the city before settling into its Woodbury location. Today, GEICO’s Woodbury office serves as the home of the largest private passenger automobile insurer in the state of New York.

“Our own regional center has grown to over 2,900 associates,” said Rosemary Mahler, human resources director for GEICO. “It’s because our associates have demonstrated the professionalism, the integrity and the commitment to serving our policyholders that GEICO is the largest auto insurer in the state.”

Right now, GEICO plans to continue the growth momentum by hiring more than 300 people to fill job openings in the upcoming year.  Mahler adds, “Part of our success comes from our associates who are motivated to provide outstanding service to our policyholders. We expect our future hires to be dedicated and eager to learn the business.”

GEICO associates also contributed significantly to several charities and organizations such as the Island Harvest, National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Long Island Special Olympics. The company is also a very large contributor to the United Way of Long Island, donating more than $700,000 last year through fundraisers and community programs.
