GEICO celebrates a decade of success, growth and community service in Tucson at March 21 event

Tucson, Ariz., March 14, 2013 – Ten years ago, GEICO opened an office in Tucson with fewer than 50 employees. GEICO Chairman and CEO Tony Nicely stated at the time that he hoped "the employee count will hit 300 in the first year and could grow substantially beyond that number in time." Nicely's hopes materialized. A decade later, GEICO's Tucson location has grown into a regional office with more than 1,200 associates with plans to hire 400 new associates by the end of 2013.

"GEICO had the foresight to see that Tucson would be a great place for a new location," said Martha Furnas, GEICO regional vice president. "We wanted to cultivate a spirit of partnership within the greater community and the Tucson area was rich with many capable, motivated and career-oriented people who were attracted to GEICO's career opportunities."

On March 21, GEICO will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Tucson. Several local and state officials will be on hand as GECIO highlights a decade of success, growth and community service. Furnas remembers those early days in 2003 as being challenging and exciting.

"We had a great group of pioneers. Associates joined us from other locations and an enthusiastic group of new Tucson associates just starting their careers with GEICO all pitched in," said Furnas. "The atmosphere was fast paced but we all came together as a team to get the job done."

GEICO's Tucson office opened for business with fewer than 50 associates. Within five years, the office expanded to 780 associates as it continued to gain market share. By the beginning of 2011, the Tucson office had more than 1,000 associates and was fully responsible for sales, service, underwriting and claims in seven states.

"Tucson has been a pivotal part of GEICO's growth and profitability," said Furnas. "This is a testament to the hard work, diligence and commitment of our associates, many of whom have been here since the beginning."

Those associates have also spent much of their free time helping local community organizations such as the United Way Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, Safe Kids Tucson and the Humane Society throughout the year. Overall, GEICO associates have contributed countless volunteer hours of their time and talent, and have become a vital part of the area.

"Tucson is a great place to live and raise a family," said Furnas. "We know that it's up to us to take care of our community and that starts with being a good corporate partner. Our success these past ten years is deeply rooted with the people in this community."
