Young couple shares with GEICO how to have 'frugal fun' on $10 Date Nights
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 16, 2013 – Jonathan and Jessica Schildt of Roselle, Ill., figured out how to stretch their budget so they could have an enjoyable social life, and in the process they took first place in GEICO's national Frugal Fun Contest.
GEICO, known for its money-saving reputation among drivers, recently ran the contest on geiconow.com, the policyholder magazine website. More than 12,000 people wrote in with tips, and visitors to the site voted for the best ideas.
The Schildt’s winning entry was a romantic one: $10 Date Nights. “My wife and I have started the tradition of going on $10 Date Nights,” Jonathan Schildt wrote in his winning tip. “We scope the local deals, clip coupons, look for daily deals on social sites, and we go out midweek when activities are cheapest. We like to see how far our $10 bill will take us.”
The couple is profiled in the upcoming spring/summer 2013 issue of GEICO Now magazine. Schildt says it’s the challenge of planning a great date on a shoestring budget that makes their $10 Date Nights so much fun.
“We love the creativity,” he says. “A lot of people assume that a good date is an expensive one and that is simply not true. Some of our best dates have been the ones that cost less than $10.”
Their dates have included discounted meals, matinee movies and hot chocolate at their favorite cafe. “The added bonus was that the cafe was closing for the night,” Schildt says, “and instead of throwing away the fresh pastries, they gave them to us—free dessert!”
He estimates that he and his wife save around $80 a month with their frugal nights out. “It really starts to add up,” he says.
As GEICO’s grand-prize winner, the couple received a $1,000 gift card from American Express®.
