Chief Petty Officer Christopher Phillips recognized as Navy GEICO Military Service Award recipient

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 30, 2013GEICO is proud to announce that Chief Petty Officer Christopher Phillips is the Navy recipient of GEICO's 2012 Military Service Award for his work in traffic safety and accident prevention. Chief Phillips is the divisional leading Chief Petty Officer of Combat Missiles Division, Weapons Department of the USS Chafee (DDG-90), a destroyer home-ported in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Chief Phillips volunteered his off-duty time to conduct motorcycle safety briefings, facilitate new driver safety courses, enroll Chafee motorcycle riders in U.S. Navy and Department of Defense safe riding courses, conduct new motorcycle check rides and teach new motorcycle owners riding techniques and maintenance. He also organized motorcycle safe check rides on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, to educate new riders about safe driving techniques and local riding regulations.

In addition, Chief Phillips coordinated new driver training courses for both car drivers and motorcycle riders under the age of 25 as well as reintroduction to driving sessions for sailors returning from Chafee's Western Pacific deployment. He also mentors motorcycle riders in the crew of the Chafee and continues to spend his personal time providing classroom instruction and hands-on practical training for motorcycle riders.

GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented Petty Officer Phillips the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C. "Many of our country's servicemen and servicewomen make tremendous efforts to improve their military and civilian communities, and GEICO is proud to honor those who might otherwise go unrecognized," Nicely said. "Petty Officer Phillips has proven through his efforts in traffic safety and accident prevention that he is a valuable member in the community and is deserving of this honor."
