GEICO honors Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Tina M. Kelly with Military Service Award
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 30, 2013 – GEICO is proud to announce that Gunnery Sgt. Tina M. Kelly is the Marine Corps recipient of GEICO's 2012 Military Service Award for her work in traffic safety and accident prevention. Gunnery Sgt. Kelly is staff noncommissioned officer in charge and chief instructor for the Air Defense Training Section "C," Charlie Company, Marine Corps Communication-Electronic School at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Recognizing the need for motorcycle safety training within her unit, Gunnery Sgt. Kelly developed a program in her off-duty time that became the blueprint for training adopted by units throughout the base. Her program trained dirt bike and ATV rider coaches and initiated race days that fostered the cross-sharing of safe riding techniques. Gunnery Sgt. Kelly expanded the program to involve the local community, bringing in the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to provide safety briefings and oversight for riders. Her program has grown beyond the base and is now being emulated by units at bases throughout the west coast.
Gunnery Sgt. Kelly was recognized by the Headquarters Marine Corps Safety Division during an annual Command Inspector General evaluation for her efforts in developing one of the best off-road safety programs in the Marine Corps.
GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented Gunnery Sgt. Kelly the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C. "Many of our country's servicemen and servicewomen make tremendous efforts to improve their military and civilian communities, and GEICO is proud to honor those who might otherwise go unrecognized," Nicely said. "Gunnery Sergeant Kelly has proven through her efforts in traffic safety and accident prevention that she is a valuable member in the community and is deserving of this honor."
