GEICO partners with Urban League of Springfield to support youth development and education

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 16, 2013 – For many children, summer camp is not only a chance to have fun and make friends but also a valuable opportunity to learn new skills and develop academic interests. To help give children in Massachusetts this experience, GEICO has teamed up with the Urban League of Springfield to send 25 boys and girls to Camp Atwater, the Urban League’s historic residential youth camp.

At the camp, located on Lake Lashaway in North Brookfield, Mass., attendees will take part in a group mentoring experience and participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) enrichment programming and other educational and recreational activities. GEICO and the Urban League of Springfield announced the partnership in March at a check presentation ceremony.

“We’re thrilled to work with GEICO to support our youth development program initiative and send children to Camp Atwater,” said Henry M. Thomas III, president of the Urban League of Springfield. “This funding enables the Urban League to prepare young people for vocational and career opportunities by exposing them to science and math concepts and practices. We hope this experience will inspire them to seek academic and career pursuits in STEM disciplines."

Kirk La, assistant vice president of underwriting for GEICO’s Northeast operations, said the company was pleased to contribute and provide Massachusetts youth this experience. “Camp Atwater plays an important role in helping children develop intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally,” he said. “GEICO is proud to play a role in equipping them with the skills they need to become successful adults.”
