Tornado-hit Oklahoma schools receive funds to restock classrooms

GEICO partners with to benefit schools in Moore, Okla.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., August 15, 2013 – Despite massive community rebuilding efforts following the May tornado in Oklahoma, much remains to be done for local schools. To help get teachers and students of Plaza Towers Elementary School, Briarwood Elementary School and Highland East Junior High in Moore, Okla., back on their feet, GEICO is donating $12,500 to in support of the organization's efforts to restock the classrooms of nearly 130 Moore, Okla. teachers.

"As an organization, we strive to provide the support teachers needs to stock their new, temporary classrooms with critical supplies and resources," said Bob Thacker, executive director of  "We were thrilled to partner with GEICO to ensure the students and teachers of Moore, Okla. are set up for success this school year."

Jim Whitten, a GEICO field representative based out of Midwest City, Okla., delivered the funds on behalf of GEICO at a teacher appreciation luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at Emmaus Baptist Church in Moore.

The event was attended by teachers and faculty from Plaza Towers Elementary, Briarwood Elementary and Highland East Junior High as well as representatives from GEICO, and other corporate sponsors. GEICO’s contribution was raised through a fundraising drive by company associates and matched by the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation, the company's charitable giving foundation.

"GEICO associates throughout the country were deeply moved by the devastation in Moore, Okla.," Witten said. "In partnership with, we’re thankful to have the opportunity to support local teachers and the necessities they need to give their students the best classroom experience possible during this unique school year."
