GEICO kicks off its series of children's plays with 'Skippyjon Jones' on Oct. 25 at Publick Playhouse

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 25, 2013 – Skippyjon Jones is a kitten with big ears and even a bigger imagination.  It's no surprise that he easily imagines himself transformed into the greatest Chihuahua sword fighter ever.  Students in Prince George's County will soon learn more about Skippyjon Jones today, as GEICO kicks off its series of eight children's plays at the Publick Playhouse in Cheverly, Md.

The GEICO Gecko will be on hand to greet students at each musical theater performance by national touring companies. The GEICO Philanthropic Foundation supports this cultural enrichment program for children through a grant to the Prince George's County Boys and Girls Club.

In addition to "Skippyjon Jones," the eight-play series includes the following midweek matinees inspired by award-winning books, history and cultural heritage:

  • Thursday, Nov. 14, "June B. Jones – Jingle Bells, Batman Smells"
  • Tuesday, Dec. 3, "Snow Queen"
  • Friday, Jan. 31, "Dream Carver"*
  • Tuesday, Feb. 11, "Songs of Freedom"
  • Friday, March 7, "Diary of a Worm, a Spider and a Fly"
  • Tuesday, April 8, "From the Mixed-Up tiles of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"
  • Tuesday, May 6, "Mexican Legends and Song"*

Nearly 8,000 students from Prince George's County (Title 1-Area 2) schools are expected to attend the midweek matinee series. Visiting schools will also receive study guides for in-class discussions with the students.

The Publick Playhouse is a facility of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George's County. For more information, contact the Publick Playhouse at (301) 277-1710 or visit

And getting back to Skippyjon, what does he do when his canine friends get terrorized by a huge bee? Does he turn back to being a cat or does he remain a top-fighting Chihuahua? Theater goers will find out later today.

*Indicates bilingual performances and Dream Carver adds an additional family performance on Feb. 1 at 11 a.m.
