GEICO urges drivers to be mindful of auto theft this holiday season

NICB Report: New Year's Day leads holidays in car thefts

WASHINGTON, D.C, December 12, 2013 – GEICO advises drivers to be mindful of auto theft this holiday season and on New Year's Day in particular. A recent report by the National Information Crime Bureau (NICB) found that holiday auto theft increased by 2.5 percent from 2011 to 2012.

"Thieves are always on the lookout for easy opportunities to steal a vehicle, and that includes holidays. They know roads and parking lots are bustling and people are preoccupied and celebrating with family and friends," said Steven Rutzebeck, director of GEICO's special investigation unit.

NICB recommends that drivers take the following special precautions during the busy holiday shopping season:

  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Keep packages in the trunk, leaving nothing visible in the interior
  • As always, ensure your vehicle is locked before leaving it

Be sure to also follow GEICO's tips on preventing auto theft. For more information on holiday auto theft and to see the full report, go to www.nicb.org.
