GEICO celebrates 10 years of building careers and the community in Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y., March 10, 2014 – On March 8, 2004, GEICO opened an office in the Buffalo area with just 75 employees. When GEICO Chairman and CEO Tony Nicely announced the office opening, he laid out the company's long-term goal of having as many as 2,500 associates in Buffalo within 15-20 years. Nicely's hopes were more than met. GEICO eclipsed 2,500 associates in June of 2013, and a decade after opening, the office is now home to more than 2,700 associates.
"Our office here in Buffalo has been integral to GEICO's growth and profitability over the past 10 years, so the company was quite prescient when it chose Buffalo as an office location," said Rick Hoagland, GEICO regional vice president. "GEICO saw that the Buffalo area workforce was full of capable, motivated and career-oriented people, and it also saw the potential to create strong, lasting partnerships in the communities of the greater Buffalo area and Western New York."
But despite the rapid associate expansion in Buffalo, there is still room to grow. By the end of 2014, GEICO would like to bring on 750 new associates in sales, service, claims and the Management Development Program, one of GEICO's leadership programs.
"In order to continue to grow, we need to keep adding and training associates," Hoagland said. "Our associates earned more than 1,300 promotions in 2013, so that has opened up new opportunities for candidates in the area who are interested in building a career at GEICO. Associates in this office have proven that they have the work ethic, the commitment to customer care and the will to succeed to help take the company to greater heights, and I'm confident we will be able to bring on more associates with those same qualities."
GEICO associates in Buffalo have also spent much of their free time supporting and volunteering for community organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Club of Buffalo, Buffalo Urban League, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and many others. Overall, GEICO associates have contributed thousands of volunteer hours of their time and talent.
"Our success this past decade is deeply rooted with the people in this community," Hoagland said. "The passion I see every day from our associates in their desire to build and improve our community is nothing short of spectacular. It makes me proud to be a part of GEICO and to call the Buffalo area my home."
