GEICO honors Army Specialist Darnell Lockwood with a 2014 Military Service Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 28, 2015 – GEICO has recognized Specialist Darnell D. Lockwood of the United States Army with a 2014 Military Service Award for his exceptional efforts to prevent drunk driving.

SPC Lockwood, who serves as team chief for the Retransmission Team 425 IN, 6th Brigade Engineering Battalion at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, has volunteered more than 200 hours for the Joint Base Against Drunk Driving (JBADD) program since his recent arrival. SPC Lockwood selflessly gives his time to provide safe rides home for other service members to prevent impaired driving in the community.

He has served as a driver for JBADD on most weekends as well as on major holidays including Christmas, New Year's Eve and Fourth of July. As a result of his dedication to JBADD, SPC Lockwood has been certified to track hours for all volunteers on base, and recently assumed the role of vice president for the program.

Originally from Los Angeles, SPC Lockwood has a sociology degree from California State University at Bakersfield. Prior to joining the Army, he worked at several nonprofits that provided help to adults with disabilities.

GEICO chairman and CEO Tony Nicely presented Specialist Lockwood the Military Service Award at a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C. "Many military men and women go well beyond the call of duty to make a difference in both military and civilian communities," Nicely said. "Specialist Lockwood has proven through his efforts to prevent drunk driving that he is not only a dedicated safety advocate but also an exceptional leader. We are proud to present him with this award."

The GEICO Military Service Awards, now in their 27th year, have recognized members of the U.S. military for their special achievements and contributions to the civilian and military community since 1988.
