GEICO honors Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Matthew McQueen with Military Service Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 28, 2015 – GEICO is proud to announce that Staff Sergeant Matthew E. McQueen is the Marine Corps recipient of GEICO's 2014 Military Service Award for his work in drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Sgt. McQueen is assigned to Second Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruiting Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Since 2008, SSgt. McQueen has volunteered his time counseling at-risk youth and adults in Greenville, Tenn., on the dangers and risks of drug addiction and alcohol abuse.  His leadership and work in that community was vital in raising enough money to fund the purchase of special equipment and supplies to aid infants suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), a condition that causes infants born to drug-addicted mothers to themselves become addicted.

SSgt. McQueen's work in drug and alcohol abuse prevention is especially noteworthy considering the arduous nature of his assignments while on active duty. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children.

GEICO chairman Tony Nicely presented SSgt. McQueen the award at a ceremony yesterday in Washington, D.C. "GEICO is proud to honor those who might otherwise go unrecognized for going above and beyond the call of duty to make a positive impact in their communities," Nicely said. "Staff Sergeant McQueen's efforts to combat drug and alcohol abuse reflect greatly upon himself and the members of the United States Marine Corps. Sergeant McQueen has proven to be positive force in the community and is greatly deserving of this honor."

The GEICO Military Service Awards, now in their 27th year, have recognized members of the U.S. military for their special achievements and contributions to the civilian and military community since 1988.
