GEICO names Jonathan Shafner as deputy general counsel

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 20, 2017 – Jonathan Shafner has been named deputy general counsel at GEICO's corporate headquarters in Chevy Chase, Md. Shafner has served GEICO in a number of legal positions most recently serving as assistant vice president, assistant general counsel and assistant secretary.

Shafner joined GEICO in 1986 as an attorney for GEICO's life insurance subsidiaries. After GEICO sold its life insurance operations in 1992, he joined the Prairie States Life Insurance Company as assistant general counsel. In 1994, Shafner returned to GEICO's office of the general counsel in the role of counsel.

In 2001, he was promoted to senior counsel and then was named assistant vice president, assistant general counsel and assistant secretary in 2006. Three years later, Shafner transitioned to lead the site effectiveness division in GEICO's Internet Business Unit prior to returning to the office of the general counsel in 2010.

Shafner holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Connecticut and a law degree from Western New England University School of Law in Springfield, Mass., where he was a member of the Law Review.
