GEICO names Scott Markel vice president of mid-Atlantic operations

FREDERICKSBURG, Va., July 21, 2017 – Scott Markel has been named vice president of GEICO's Fredericksburg regional office. He will have responsibility for all day-to-day operations related to GEICO policyholders in the mid-Atlantic region. Prior to the announcement, Markel served as GEICO's vice president of underwriting, research and control at the company's corporate office in Chevy Chase, Md.

Markel began his career at GEICO in 1986, as a sales counselor and later held a number of supervisory and management positions in the sales department. In 1999, he was chosen to lead GEICO's policy system project and then was named sales director at the company's Fredericksburg office.

In 2003, Markel returned to GEICO's Chevy Chase, Md., office to participate in the company's Executive Assistant Program and then was promoted to director of GEICO's Coralville, Iowa, service center.

In 2005, Markel was elected as assistant vice president of underwriting, sales and service for GEICO's Midwest operations in Macon, Ga. In 2010, he was promoted to Midwest regional vice president prior to assuming his current position as vice president of the company's underwriting, research and control operations in 2015. Markel holds a degree in business administration from Strayer College in Washington, D.C.
