GEICO helps support Marines in motorcycle safety
WASHINGTON, D.C., JULY 29, 2017 – In 2008, more U.S. Marines died on motorcycles than in the Iraq War, was the finding of the U.S. Marines Corps. To combat that loss of life, the U.S. Marine Corps launched Semper Ride the following year, featuring safety training, mentorship, and education about motorcycling.
Since the start of the program, the fatality rate for Marine motorcyclists has been reduced by 44 percent. "A priority for GEICO has always been safety and education through the various programs we sponsor," said Wayne Petro divisional director at GEICO. "Understanding how to handle a motorcycle before a problem arises builds confidence and protects not only you but the ones around you." Open to Marines and their families, the Semper Rides clinics are taught by top riding instructors along with professional racers as guest coaches.
The U.S. Marine Corps Safety Division instituted this program as required training for all active duty Marines that participate in motorcycling, whether on- or off-road. A newly forward partnership between U.S. Marine Corps Safety Division and Marine Corps Community Services allows Marines to take part in the MCCS Semper Ride Motorcycle Expo.
Over 17,000 Marines will take part in five upcoming Semper Rides events. The MCCS Semper Ride Motorcycle Expo, sponsored in part by GEICO, will include freestyle motocross demonstrations, interactive exercises, new technologies and more.
