GEICO begins new school year with award from Bibb County Schools
MACON, Ga., Oct. 3, 2017 – The Bibb County (Georgia) School District honored GEICO's Macon regional office for its commitment to helping students excel.
GEICO received the Industry Award on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, at the first-ever Bibb County Schools VIP (Victory in Progress) Luncheon. The honor was primarily for the support GEICO associates provide to Florence Bernd Elementary School, which is located across the street from the Macon office.
"We call it our adopted school," said Marvel Burgess, Macon regional community affairs coordinator. "They don't ask for much, but we do anything they ask us to do."
Each summer, associates hold a school supply drive to ensure that students have the tools they need to succeed, and throughout the school year, associates are a frequent presence at Bernd, whether to decorate the gymnasium for a school function or read to students during their lunch hours. GEICIO has also provided prizes for spelling bees and perfect attendance and even arranged for a visit by a pro athlete to talk to students about bullying. The school shows its appreciation each Christmas by sending over the student choir to perform holiday favorites for GEICO associates.
"GEICO Insurance Company is an integral part of our success at Bernd Elementary School," Principal Chad Thompson wrote in his nomination letter. "Whenever Bernd is in need and can't fund a particular event or item, GEICO is a phone call away to provide assistance."
During the award presentation, GEICO was also lauded for its participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP), which provides paid jobs at the Macon office to high school students during their senior year. On Thursday, Aug. 7, 32 "YAPPERS" started work at GEICO.
