GEICO IT associates join Bytes for Bites' statewide tech battle against hunger
MACON, Ga., Aug. 7, 2018 – The IT Department at GEICO's Macon, Georgia, regional offices won the statewide "total points" award in this year's Bytes for Bites competition. GEICO associates also earned an award for being the top finishers in all of Middle Georgia.
A partnership between the Georgia Food Bank Association and the Technology Association of Georgia, Bytes for Bites pits tech companies and IT departments across the state in a friendly competition to generate food and funds for Georgia's eight food banks.
From June 11- June 22, about 40 companies earned points for each dollar and food item they collected. GEICO IT associates raised $1,260 through several fundraisers. Associates also collected more than 150 pounds of food and visited the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank to sort donations.
Middle Georgia Community Food Bank is a short distance from GEICO's offices in Macon. Though this was the first year GEICO participated in Bytes for Bites, associates plan to continue to support their local food bank.
"We wanted to help because the food bank is our neighbor, and they do so much to help our community," said GEICO Software Engineer Manager Nathan Dees, who coordinated the company's Bytes for Bites effort. "The food bank takes every $1 raised and turns it into $9 worth of groceries; we are pleased that our efforts will buy $11,340 of groceries to help feed residents of the Macon area."
GEICO was among several companies awarded for earning the most Bytes for Bites points. All told, $70,000 and over 9,000 pounds of food was generated to fight hunger in Georgia, where one in four children is food insecure.
