GEICO’s weekend at the World Superbike series was a successful one.
The company served as title sponsor for the Laguna Seca event at Mazda Raceway in Monterey, Calif., as well as the individual sponsor for England’s Tom Sykes and Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Rea for the weekend. And congratulations are in order for Sykes and Rea as they finished second and third respectively in the pair of World Superbike races on July 19.
The World Superbike class of racing showcases modified production bikes. Teams can make adjustments to a bike’s exhaust, engine, suspension and brakes. Each bike must come under the 168 kg weight limit, and bike power can range between 750cc and 1200cc.
Both riders were happy with their finishes, but were disappointed to miss out on the top podium spot.
“It was not ideal, but overall I’m happy with second position considering the circumstances,” says Sykes, whose bike had some tire pressure issues.
“Tom and I both lost a lot of time to Chaz [Davies] when the rain was coming, but we ended up with a really good pace together. Today, we played the long game a little bit and third is where I could finish,” says Rea, of the results at the ninth round of the competition in the 2015 season.
Although they missed out on the win in California, the pair remain at the top of the overall season standings. Rea sits at the top of the leaderboard with 407 points, with Sykes in second place with 282 points. Davies, the California winner, is in third.
The season wraps up in October with the 13th race in Qatar.
