An accident can be distressing, but knowing what to do in advance can help you deal with the unexpected.

Be Prepared

It is helpful to keep the following items on hand in case you are involved in an accident.

  • Your insurance ID card, vehicle registration and list of emergency contacts.
  • First-aid kit and medical card listing allergies to any medication, or special conditions.
  • Flashlight
  • Blanket
  • Flares
  • Jumper cables
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Trash bags
  • Disposable camera (if your cell phone does not have one.)

1. Be Safe

  • Move your car to a safe nearby location, but be careful not to leave the scene.
  • Check to see if anyone is hurt. Call 911 for medical assistance.
  • Contact the police. They will let you know if an officer needs to be present at the scene.

2. Stay Calm

  • Don't panic – remain calm and polite
  • Do not admit fault
  • Cooperate with the police

3. Exchange information

  • Collect contact information for anyone who was there, including other drivers, witnesses, and the tow company if your car is towed.
  • Obtain police report information
  • Collect information about all vehicles involved:
    • Year, make, and model
    • License plate number
    • Insurance carrier
    • Insurance policy number

4. Report the accident

  • Whatever the damage, you should report the accident to GEICO: report it online or by calling 1-800-841-3000.
