You've got questions. We've got answers.

Simply stated, mechanical breakdowns are no fun. But, you can guard against those surprise auto repair bills with Mechanical Breakdown Insurance coverage (or MBI for short). MBI helps protect you from expensive auto repair bills when your vehicle experiences a mechanical failure. MBI covers* cost for repairs to the components of your car like the:

  • engine
  • drive axle
  • transmission
  • steering
  • brakes
  • air conditioning
  • cooling and electrical

Want to know more? Take a moment to review these frequently-asked questions:

Is MBI coverage similar to a dealer's extended warranty?

GEICO MBI provides much broader coverage than a dealer's extended warranty because all mechanical parts of the vehicle are covered*. When you add MBI to your policy, you only pay a small premium each policy period rather than hundreds of additional dollars at the time you purchase your vehicle.

Is it difficult to submit an MBI claim?

No. Just call toll free at 1-800-443-7411 for the MBI claims department or go to our policyholder service center on geico.com to report an MBI claim online.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In most states, for coverage to be applicable, you must obtain authorization prior to any repair work being done. See policy for details.

Can I take my car to a repair shop of my choice?

Yes, you may use the licensed repair shop of your choice, unless the repair is covered by a recall, voluntary repair program or the manufacturer's warranty. In those cases you would need to take your vehicle back to a dealer who services the specific make and model.

Dealer extended service contracts usually encourage you to have repairs made at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. This could force you to return to a repair shop you don't care to use. GEICO MBI allows you to use any licensed repair shop. This could be especially important if you travel or move — MBI travels with you!

What happens if I breakdown while traveling?

If you ever have a breakdown, accident, or need assistance in any of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, you're covered. We are only a phone call away, 24 hours a day.

When should I buy MBI coverage for my new car?

You can add MBI to your policy as soon as possible after the car is purchased. GEICO MBI can only be added if the vehicle is:

  • less than 15 months old
  • the odometer reading shows less than 15,000 miles
  • and you are the first title holder

How long will my MBI coverage last?

Because MBI is part of your auto insurance policy, you may renew the coverage, up to 100,000 miles or seven (7) years, whichever comes first.**

How do I pay for MBI?

You pay for MBI as a coverage on your auto policy. There are no separate payments to make. We offer you the choice of several plans for paying your auto insurance premium. You may pay in full or select an installment plan - whatever fits your budget.

Dealers usually add the cost of their extended service contracts to the amount you pay for your new car up front or they add it into the amount you finance.
