New York Vehicle Photo Inspection FAQs

What is the purpose of the photo inspection?

The state of New York requires this inspection to protect you and your insurance carrier. This inspection is designed to document the existence of the vehicle as well as the vehicle's physical condition, options, and anti-theft devices. The ultimate goal of this inspection is to help reduce the possibility of fraudulent claims and lower the cost of automobile physical damage insurance coverage (Collision and Comprehensive) by accurately documenting information about your vehicle.

Is there a fee for the inspection, and how long will it take?

There is NO CHARGE to you for this inspection. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete the report and photographs.

Where should I take my vehicle to be inspected?

CARCO has an extensive network of inspection sites strategically located throughout the state of New York ready to serve your inspection needs. Call (888) 242-1200 or visit CARCO to receive a listing of inspection facilities near you. Please contact the CARCO inspection site prior to bringing in your vehicle as inspections may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

What if I have a brand new vehicle?

If your vehicle is new and has less than 1,000 miles on the odometer, an inspection is not required. Instead, you must provide a copy of the window sticker and one of the following:

  1. A copy of the bill of sale with a full description of the vehicle, including all options and accessories OR
  2. A copy of the lease agreement

These items can be faxed to us at (516) 704-2498 or emailed to R2inspfax@geico.com. Be sure to include your policy number with each document.

What documents will be completed at the inspection site?

The CARCO inspector will complete a state-mandated inspection report form listing the general condition of your car and its options, vehicle identification number (VIN), odometer reading, etc. The inspector will take photographs of your car and provide you with a copy of the report for your records. The original report and photographs will be processed by CARCO and forwarded to GEICO. You do not need to send them to us.

What will happen if I fail to have this inspection performed?

New York Insurance Regulation 79 requires that the mandatory photo inspection be completed within fourteen calendar days after the effective date of coverage. Failure to comply will result in the suspension (removal) of physical damage coverage.
