Frequently Asked Questions

Program and Eligibility

  • What is DriveEasy?

DriveEasy is GEICO's safe-driving program that puts you in control of your rate by rewarding you with savings based on your driving behavior. Using the sensors in your phone, the GEICO Mobile app automatically logs your driving behaviors—like how hard you brake, how far you drive, and how often you use your phone—and calculates a safe driving score.

GEICO then factors your score into your insurance rate. At each renewal, your rate will automatically adjust based on the driving score of you and any other drivers on your policy. Most customers will be able to save based on their safe driving habits. Riskier drivers may see a higher rate depending on the state they live in.

The safer you drive, the better you score. The better you score, the more you could save.

  • Does DriveEasy stop me from using my phone while driving?

No, DriveEasy does not stop you from using your phone whether you're driving or not.

  • How much data and battery does DriveEasy use?

DriveEasy's data and battery usage can vary but is generally low. GEICO Mobile saves data usage and battery life by staying inactive when you're not driving. It also doesn't begin logging driving data until after the first quarter mile of a trip. A typical driver will use 60 to 70 MB of data per month for DriveEasy. Leaving Wi-Fi on helps the app use less mobile data and can improve location accuracy.

  • Do I need to open the GEICO Mobile app every time I drive?

No, you do not need to open the GEICO Mobile app each time you drive. After you complete DriveEasy setup, stay logged in to the app and your driving data will be automatically recorded when you drive.

  • Am I eligible to participate in DriveEasy?

To participate in DriveEasy, all you need is an iPhone or Android phone that has a data plan and is compatible with the GEICO Mobile app. Prepaid iPhone and Android phones that can receive short-code text messages are eligible. Just make sure your phone's operating system is up to date:

    • iPhones running iOS 10 or higher
    • Android phones running Android 6.0 or higher

All enrolled drivers on a policy need to participate. Driver enrollment requirements differ by state and program details and are presented during your quote.

  • Why are some of the drivers on my policy ineligible for DriveEasy?

Driver enrollment requirements differ by state and program details. Drivers are considered ineligible for DriveEasy if:

    • The driver doesn't have an active status on the policy
    • The driver doesn't have an active U.S driver's license
    • The driver is enrolled and participating in DriveEasy on another GEICO policy
  • Can I re-enroll in DriveEasy after I've unenrolled from the program?

To check if you're eligible to re-enroll in DriveEasy, contact us through chat or over the phone.

  • Why am I not receiving the verification text message to set up DriveEasy?

There are a few reasons that you are not receiving text messages from us.

Your phone settings may block text messages from GEICO. Enable text messages from GEICO by reinstalling the app:

    1. Uninstall GEICO Mobile from your phone
    2. Restart your phone
    3. Download and reinstall GEICO Mobile
    4. Agree to receive texts from GEICO when asked
    5. Make sure any Focus (iPhone) or Do Not Disturb (Android) modes are OFF

Your phone settings may block text messages from short codes. Short codes are special telephone numbers (usually five to six digits long) that are used for text messaging services. Enable text messages from short codes in your phone's settings:

Android users can enable Premium SMS access

    1. Open Settings
    2. Tap Apps
    3. Tap Special app access
    4. Tap Premium SMS access
    5. Tap the messaging application you use and select Always allow
    6. Make sure Do Not Disturb mode is OFF

    iPhone users can reset iMessage

    1. Open Settings
    2. Tap Messages
    3. Toggle iMessage OFF
    4. Toggle iMessage back ON
    5. Toggle Send as SMS ON
    6. Make sure Focus mode is OFF

Your mobile carrier may block text messages from short codes, especially if you have a prepaid phone. Contact your mobile carrier to check if they prevent text messages from short codes. Your mobile carrier must allow text messages from short codes for you to be eligible for DriveEasy.

If you verified you can receive text messages from short codes but you're still having issues, contact us through chat or over the phone.

  • How do I disable DriveEasy and unenroll from the program?

Depending on your DriveEasy program requirements, unenrolling may result in a premium change.

To disable DriveEasy and unenroll from the program, contact us through chat or over the phone.

Scoring and Trips

  • How does DriveEasy calculate a driving score?

To calculate a driving score, DriveEasy looks at your driving behavior data from different categories:

    • Distracted Driving (or Distractions): how often you actively use your phone while driving, like making handheld calls or interacting with apps
    • Hard Braking (or Braking and Acceleration): how hard you rapidly decelerate and how fast you quickly accelerate while driving
    • Cornering: how quickly you travel when going around corners
    • Smoothness: how consistent your cruising speeds are and how long you drive at those speeds

You'll receive a rating for how well you perform in each of these categories along with any logged slip-ups. Slip-ups are unsafe behaviors, like texting while driving.

DriveEasy also considers other factors about your trips:

    • Time of Day: how often you travel late at night
    • Distance Driven: how far and long you drive per trip
    • Route Regularity: how consistent your routes are
    • Weather: weather and road conditions during your trips

Based on all these driving behaviors and factors, DriveEasy calculates an overall driving score. This driving score is what impacts your rate—higher scores lead to greater savings. This driving score first applies to your rate 45 days after the start of your policy. Then, your rate will update at each policy renewal based on your most recent driving score as you continue to log your driving behaviors.

Be sure to check the DriveEasy Dashboard in the GEICO Mobile app. There you'll be able to track your scores, view your trips, and get driving tips to improve your score and save even more.

  • What does DriveEasy consider to be distracted driving?

Distracted driving is when you actively use your phone while driving, like making handheld calls or interacting with apps. This also includes when a passenger uses your phone, because the app can't see who's using the phone. These things are only counted as distracted driving when traveling over 6 mph.

If you use Bluetooth for hands-free calls, GPS for directions, or stream music, it's not considered distracted driving as long as you're not also interacting with the phone.

  • How does DriveEasy know I'm the driver or passenger?

DriveEasy uses your phone's sensors to identify if you're a driver, a passenger, or even if you're on a bus or train. We list all your trips in the app, but your driving score only uses trips where your role is “Driver.” Trips where you were a passenger or something else, like on a train, are not included in your driving score.

If DriveEasy logged the wrong role for a trip, you can update your driving role under the Trips section in the app.

When you're a driver and a passenger uses your phone, the app may count it as distracted driving. This is because the app can't see who's using the phone. If this happens, update your driving role to “Passenger” after the trip shows up in the app. This will keep it from impacting your driving score.

  • Why isn't my score updating after a trip?

Driving scores can take 24-48 hours to update after you finish a trip. Keep driving and check back later in the app for updated trip details and your score.

  • What if DriveEasy didn't log part or all of my trip?

DriveEasy starts logging your trip after the first ¼ mile to make sure it's a valid trip, so it's common for the app to skip the start of a trip. Other trips that are logged incompletely or not at all include:

    • Short trips that total less than 1 mile
    • Trips with low phone battery
    • Trips when there is poor or no cell reception

If any of these were the case, you're fine and can continue driving. Keep in mind, trips can take up to 24 hours to appear in the app.

If DriveEasy is missing more than the first ¼ mile or misses an entire valid trip, you'll want to check a few things to make sure the app is set up properly:

    • Check that GEICO Mobile is installed and up to date
    • Check that you're logged in to the app
    • Check the app's DriveEasy Permissions Settings and enable any disabled permissions

Still having issues? Contact us through chat or over the phone.

  • Can I stop the app from logging my trips when it's for work?

No, the app can't log work trips separate from personal trips. We log all trips regardless of why you're driving or which vehicle you're using. This is to provide you with the most accurate driving score and feedback.

Privacy

  • What data does GEICO collect, and how is it protected?

GEICO only collects driving-related data from your phone's GPS, Bluetooth, and other sensors. This data includes where, when, and how long you drive, and driving behaviors like using your phone while driving. We only collect this data when a trip is taking place. We gather road conditions and weather data from our partners.

Your driving data is encrypted and stored in one of our secure data centers in the United States. We restrict access to your encrypted data to a limited number of GEICO associates. We may also utilize driving data to help speed up the claims process for customers.

    What we don't do:

    • Capture or report speeding violations
    • Share or sell your driving info to third parties
    • Access, read, listen, or record any messages or phone calls or see your contacts

View GEICO's Privacy Policy for more information.

Accident Assist

  • What is Accident Assist?

With Accident Assist, DriveEasy can detect a hard brake and will immediately send a notification to check if you're ok. If you need assistance, we'll pinpoint your location and help you contact emergency services, request a tow, or get other claims support.
