Flood insurance goes beyond the coverage of a standard homeowners insurance policy and protects you from more severe types of water damage, like heavy rain, melting snow, and severe coastal storms. After all, water's great in pools and on water slides but not so much in places it doesn't belong in your home. So, whether you're required to buy flood insurance or just want additional protection for your property, GEICO can help insure your investment with a flood policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
What is a flood?
A flood is defined by the NFIP as: A general and temporary condition where two or more acres of normally dry land or two or more properties are inundated by water or mudflow.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Flood Map Service Center will help you locate your area's flood map.
What does flood insurance cover? What isn't covered?
Flood insurance provides coverage for both the structure of the home and personal property in case of damage.
Your foundation and the critical systems that keep your home running are covered. So are flooring and personal belongings - unless they're in the basement.
Keep in mind that structure and personal property coverages usually have separate limits and deductibles so read the policy details carefully. Our flood insurance counselors are happy to help. Call us at (800) 841-2964.
What about the basement?
There is limited coverage in the basement. Certain items used to service the residence are covered, like water heaters, furnaces, washers, and dryers.
Carpeting and wall finishing are not covered. Neither is other personal property.
Do I need flood insurance?
If you live in an area at high risk for floods, flood insurance may be required by your lender. Enter your address here to determine if you live in in a high-risk zone in the United States.
Think because you don't live near the coast that your home is safe from flooding? The truth is, floods can occur anywhere. In fact, 25% of NFIP's flood insurance claims are for structures outside of high-risk flood zones.* Something else to consider, most homeowners insurance policies don't cover flood damage.

We've got you covered for flood insurance.
If your home is in a community that participates in the NFIP you may be eligible for flood insurance at a modest cost through the federal government. This means insurance companies issue flood insurance that's administered by the federal government.
